My Uncle Joe died a few weeks ago. He was the last of four and made it to 95. He was found without his cane, dressed up, in the field with his cows he tended to every day. If you’re gonna go…that might not be the worst way.

It’s hard not to look at his passing and not reflect on my dad. They were exceptionally close. Joe got to see Dean and got to know Shannon and we tried as much as we could to find our way to California to check in on him. It was a continuation of a deal my dad and I made shortly before he died and one I was proud to honor when we could. I try not to get overly sentimental about it but he was the closest Dean would have to a grandfather on my side and I appreciated that.

The past few days in Riverdale were filled with stories and time with my two cousins who I hadn’t really reconnected with in decades. Each of us remarked how we saw things in our parents that we found in Joe. Joe’s hands were exactly like my dads, his smile was similar and the way people gravitated to him was on par with Jim. I’m gonna miss that guy.

Cheers to you, Fresno.
